Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Wednesday arrested 44 people, including eight Bangladeshis, from different bordering areas in Rowmari and Bhurungamari upazilas of Kurigram district.
Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Rowmari Police Station, said 30 people were pushed into Bangladesh from India through various border points in Rowmari upazila, and it is believed that 22 of them were Rohingya.
BGB is, nevertheless, confirming the detainees’ identities.
Locals alerted the BGB after spotting them wandering around the neighboring territories.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mahbubul Haque, the BGB-22 commanding officer, reported that 14 individuals, including eight women and children, were taken into custody from the Bhawal Kuri border in the district’s Bhurungamari upazila.
“They were all Rohingyas,” he claimed.
According to BGB, the identities of the remaining people are being confirmed.
