Shahriar Alam Shammo

Dhaka: Attackers fatally stabbed Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of Dhaka University (DU), in the Suhrawardy Udyan area late Tuesday night. Police have since detained three individuals in connection with the murder.

Shammo, 25, a student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) and the literary and publication secretary of the AF Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra Dal, suffered fatal injuries during an altercation reportedly stemming from a motorcycle collision.

The incident occurred near the Kali Mandir area of Suhrawardy Udyan around midnight. According to police, a physical confrontation broke out after Shammo’s motorcycle collided with another. During the scuffle, an attacker stabbed Shammo.

Critically injured, classmates rushed Shammo to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.

In the early hours of Wednesday, police detained three individuals in connection with the killing. Police have identified the detainees as Tamim Hawlader, 30, Samrat Mallick, 28, and Palash Sarder, 30.

According to police, the arrested individuals are not DU students and are reportedly involved in a footpath business.

DMP Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam stated that three youths attacked Shammo near the Kali Mandir area of Suhrawardy Udyan. The attackers also sustained injuries during the incident and were receiving treatment at a clinic, he said.

“Upon receiving information, police detained two of them from the clinic, while the third suspect managed to flee and efforts to arrest him are ongoing,” he added.

He also added that preliminary investigations suggest a physical altercation broke out near Ramna Kali Mandir over a motorcycle collision, during which an attacker stabbed the DU student to death.

Meanwhile, the victim’s elder brother, Shariful Islam, has filed a murder case at Shahbagh police station, accusing 10 to 12 unnamed individuals in connection with the death.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Khalid Mansur of Shahbagh police station confirmed the detentions and the filing of the case. He added that police are investigating whether others were involved in the incident and multiple police teams are currently working to uncover further details.

The sudden death of Shahriar Alam Shammo has cast a pall over the university campus, with fellow students and political activists demanding swift justice for the slain student.
